A very short, incomplete list of the many contributors, collaborators, and artists who've worked with us lives right here. We hope to update it soon.
CONVOLUTED YET FASCINATING HISTORY: PART ONE
New Oregon Arts & Letters evolved out of something called 2GQ. Short for 2 Gyrlz Quarterly, it was founded by Tiffany Lee Brown under the auspices of 2 Gyrlz Performative Arts, a most excellent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Portland, Oregon. We launched our first web-based publishing project in 2003, followed by our limited edition print journals. Book arts projects and a new blog came along later.
In addition to online and print publishing projects, 2GQ produced and curated numerous multidisciplinary events, hosting music, literary readings, performance art, dance, participatory art, social practice, visual art, book arts, printing, and other good stuff—often all in the same event, under the same roof, at the same time. Examples are the Exquisite Language interdisciplinary show/publication at the Heathman Hotel for the Enteractive Language Festival and the Public Works series of works in progress at the Someday Lounge.
In 2009, we changed our name, Board of Directors, and mission statement, retaining the eight-year legal history and EIN number of 2 Gyrlz Performative Arts... all because the Gyrlz founders moved to England (sigh). Now, call us New Oregon Arts & Letters. Our new domain is neworegon.org. We hope you'll be patient with our transition—and maybe offer some help in the form of a donation or volunteer support. Contact neworegonarts@gmail.com to join our mailing list or get in touch.
MUCH MORE CONVOLUTED AND EVEN MORE FASCINATING HISTORY: PART TWO
2 Gyrlz Performative Arts was inspired by, and arose from, the organization Two Girls in Eugene, Oregon. Co-founder Lidia Yuknavitch from the original organization, and editor of the freaking fantastic journal Two Girls Review, has supported 2 Gyrlz and 2GQ throughout our evolution in the Portland non-profit arts world, and curated a series for the early 2GQ webzine.
There's still some confusion, though. To clear it up: 2 Gyrlz Performative Arts is not the same thing as Two Girls, and 2GQ/2 Gyrlz Quarterly is not the same thing as Two Girls Review. OK? OK! Let's keep going.
Q: IS IT TRUE THAT NEW OREGON and 2GQ SUPPORT THE FINAL SERIAL COMMA?
A: Yes we do, in thought, word, and deed.
A FINAL WORD FROM THE FOUNDER OF NEW OREGON:
"Squirrel."
