Good People Of Portland: Happy New Year. I'm writing to invite you to a reading I'm doing on January 8 at Powell's at 7:30 pm. It's for a new collection of short stories I wrote called Livability.

And also, while I'm at it, I should let you know that Wendy and Lucy (pictured), a movie based on one of the stories in the book, opens at Cinema 21 this week. Check that out, too.

WHAT'S THIS CALLED? WHITE NOISE?

This week (FOR REAL! sez Ricardo) a very special "What's This Called?" with your host Ricardo Wang—a fabulous reviewer for 2GQ's print journal—for Saturday, December 27th from Noon to 1 PM Pacific Time on KPSU... the show that was snowed out but refuses to die... A WHITE NOISE CHRISTMAS.

Smegma, Moodring, Yellow Swans, and John Zorn will be on deck along with lots of other treats, up to and probably including the unreleased sweet sounds of Flail, a 1990s noise and vocal experiment of Soriah (Enrique Ugalde) and Passiflora (Tiffany Lee Brown), who have been suspected of collusion with of 2GQ and Gyrlz.

This week's show is a White Noise Christmas with live on-the-air remixes and holiday goodness from Smegma, Yellow Swans, John Zorn, and Flail, the vintage 1995 Oakland experinoise project of gyrl people Enrique Ugalde (Soriah) and Tiffany Lee Brown (that'd be me). And a special appearance from our special 2GQ mascot, Fucktard the Xmas Dog!

ARTISTS ACROSS THE NATION PERFORM freedom of information 2008:

A PERFORMANCE/PROTEST/RITUAL IN RESPONSE TO THE WARS IN AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ

 

DECEMBER 31, 2008........LOCATION: VARIOUS, THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY

IN PORTLAND: TAHNI HOLT AT PERFORMANCE WORKS NW ~ FREE

In response to the continuing U.S. led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, choreographer Miguel Gutierrez has invited artists from across the country to perform freedom of information 2008: a 24 hour performance/protest/ritual of continuous movement improvisation performed while blindfolded and ear-plugged, which is intended as a contemplative act of solidarity with those displaced by the wars.

This action takes place over the last 24 hours of 2008, from midnight to midnight of December 31st. It ends with the ringing in of the New Year. 

DECEMBER 28: PIRATE PERFORMANCE ART & MUSIC EXTRAVAGANZA

The one and only Captain Bootybeard presents an evening of piratey mayhem early in the evening on Sunday, December 28, at Dante's in downtown Portland, Oregon. Pirate chanteys will be sung, and performance artist Tirana Gjuha will present "Via Crucis Piraticus" based on recent findings that Jesus was a female pirate.

Wear your eyepatch. This early show will be followed by the weekly gyrations of Sinferno Cabaret.

LOVE PERSONIFIED; VERTIGO

Head over to the Cooley on Monday the 8th for performance, music, art, and a film screening. "Love: Personified" promises a "live and virtual encounter" by Stephanie Gervais and Alexandra Schmidt (4 pm) followed by Zoe Roller (5 pm) and two David Reed videos (6-9 pm; BYO cushions and pillows for lounging). One piece, "Judy's Bedroom," was inspired by and appropriates from the Hitchcock classic "Vertigo," so the gallery is showing that film as well. Admission is free.
