GRACE CONSTANTINE WINS NATIONAL AWARD

Gracie2 Zaghareet, the American belly dance magazine, has named Portland's own Grace Constantine of Deviant Dance "Best Kept Secret of 2008" with a Golden Belly award.

Grace danced with the Public Works crew during our 2GQ-produced series of works in progress at the Someday Lounge last year (and is  friend of mine from the old school West Oakland and Berkeley days).

Congrats, Gracie! ---Tif

CARMEN HERMOSILLO: HUMDOG IN MEMORIAM

Carmen Hermosillo, a contributor to 2GQ under the pseudonym "humdog," died last weekend of a heart attack at her home in California. Pighed reports that he spoke to her the night before and that she seemed OK but stressed.

A memorial service will be held online in Second Life on Saturday, August 16, 6 pm Pacific.

humdog was a kick-ass presence in the hyper-male-dominated early 1990s online world, a writer of searing poetry and hilarious invective alike. She contributed to the 2GQ print journal "Why the Fuck Should Anyone Care About Poetry?" article and to the 1993 "Chicks in Cyberspace" issue of Fringe Ware Review that Erika Whiteway (outrider) and I co-edited. I'm glad I got to work with her even if just a little bit, and to spend time trying to figure out the damned universe together.

LEARN PERFORMANCE WITH LISA NEWMAN

11635359_f8ba12cb1215031591 Portland performance artists and would-be performers have a fantastic opportunity this fall. 2 Gyrlz Performative Arts co-founder Lisa Newman will teach a ten-session class on Wednesday evenings beginning September 10th. This class is open to all, and college students may receive one credit hour for the work.

Lisa is an amazing, sensitive, conceptual performer with a formidable body of knowledge on the history and theory of contemporary performance, and I've seen some of her students create sophisticated and beautiful work. Since she doesn't always teach, you might want to jump on this one before the class fills up. Details follow. --Tiffany
