The literary, littoral, and alimentary delights of Nye Beach in Newport, Oregon, make it a necessary coastal stop for writers and fans thereof. From the author-themed rooms of the Sylvia Beach Hotel to the Nye Beach Writers' Series of readings and events, this calm little tourist hamlet has it going on. And oh, the food!

WRITERS ON THE EDGE PRESENTS THE 2008-2009 Nye Beach Writers' Series
January 19, 2008: JACK HART, managing editor at the Portland Oregonian, and author of "A Writer's Coach." 7 p.m. Open mike follows. 7 p.m.
February 16: ELINOR LANGER, journalist and non-fiction author. Her award-winning book, A Hundred Little Hitlers, is about the 1988 Portland skinhead killing. Co-sponsored with Mountain Writers Series. Open mike follows. 7 p.m.
March 15: JEFF DeMARK from Arcata, California, back by popular demand with his new one-man show, "Hard As A Diamond, Soft As The Dirt." Open mike follows. 7 p.m.
April 19: CEIRIDWEN TERRILL, herbalist and assistant professor of environmental journalism at Concordia University. Author of "Unnatural Landscapes: Tracking Invasive Species." An avid backpacker, kayaker, and sailor, she lives on her sailboat with her dog Thelma. Co-sponsored with Mountain Writers Series. Open mike follows. 7p.m.
May 17: DOUG THOMPSON, author of "Whales: Touching The Mystery." "A book that offers hope for the future of the whales and for all of us," writes Jane Goodall. Co-sponsored with Hatfield Marine Science Center, Oregon Coast Aquarium, and Mountain Writers Series in Portland. 7 p.m.
June 21: JAN BAROSS, painter, photographer, screenwriter, filmmaker, and author of the novel, "Jose Builds A Woman." Open mike follows. 7 p.m.

August 16: Confirmation Pending. Open Mike follows. 7 p.m.
September 20: CHARLES ROSSITER, performance poet from New York State. Open Mike follows. 7 p.m.
October 18: Poet DONNA HENDERSON performing with DIANE BAXTER on piano. Open Mike follows. 7 p.m.
November 15: DIANA ABU-JABER, is from a Palestinian-American family. Her first novel, "Arabian Jazz" won the Oregon Book Award and was a finalist for the national PEN/Hemingway Award. Her most recent novel "Origin," is haunted, riveting crime fiction. Open Mike follows. 7 p.m.
