Guillermo Gomez-Peña: Amazing Essay + Oregon Appearance

Guillermo_2 2 Gyrlz Performative Arts co-presents Guillermo Gomez-Peña of La Pocha Nostra this week in Portland -- a free event. Also, anyone anywhere who's interested in the current, hunkered-down, paranoid state of the arts in the USA should read Guillermo's essay on censorship. The piece will appear in an upcoming issue of TDR, but can be read now on Guillermo's "dialogues" blog.

"Our job is to raise impertinent questions, our     job is to talk about the issues that nobody’s talking about, and to     try to do with a lot of valor and clarity..."
    --Guillermo Gómez-Peña

Yeah, that’s         right… Guillermo Gómez-Peña is back as the spoken         word brujo-poeta. His entertaining and impenetrable vernacular provides         a hybrid and fantastic mix of languages and text that are by turns ironic,         despairing, defiant and incantatory. His dynamic Jamison Lecture performance,         "Mexterminator vs. the Global Predator," explores fear of immigration,         the dark side effects of globalization, the digital divide, censorship,         and interracial sexuality. This event is free and open to the public.

Gómez-Peña's         reflections and insights are presented in his usual entertaining and at         times impenetrable vernacular, a hybrid and fantastic mix of languages         and text that are by turns ironic, despairing, defiant and incantatory.         In "The Mexorcist", he unleashes the demons, both personal and         political, and invites them onstage for a mano-a-mano, from which no one         will emerge unscathed. Gómez-Peña work, which includes performance         art, video, audio, installations, poetry, journalism, and cultural theory,         explores cross-cultural issues, immigration, the politics of language,         "extreme culture" and new technologies.
